Is It Time to Mourn the Metaverse? 💔
You might have seen this tweet by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney make rounds on Twitter last week. The Metaverse is dead, are you joining the wake? 💔
Remember when Mark Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook as Meta and unveiled the Metaverse? 👀
We thought it was the future of the internet, a place where we could do whatever we did in the real world but in virtual worlds. Sadly, the actual experience fell short of the glitz and glamour Zuckerberg promised. According to the article Business Insider:
The Metaverse suffered from an acute identity crisis.
It lacked a clear use case, target audience, and compelling vision.
Despite the hype, it struggled to live up to its own expectations.
The Metaverse enjoyed everyone’s attention with every company rushing to jump on the bandwagon.
✨ CEOs called it a massive breakthrough 📈 Wall Street projected mind-boggling growth 🚅 Even Walmart and Disney hopped on the train.
But soon, as the article states, the Metaverse saw its downfall:
By October 2022, Horizon Worlds had fewer than 200,000 monthly active users, far from Meta's target of 500,000 by the end of the year.
It was plagued with bugs to the point that even Meta employees avoided using it. WHAT 🤯
Microsoft and Disney shuttered Metaverse-related projects, laid off employees.
Decentraland and Yuga Labs’ Otherside have seemingly failed to live up to their hype and claimed investors had turned their attention to the next Big Tech fad, yes you guessed it— generative AI.
Well, after looking at all the facts stated by Business Insider, we’ll let you in on the joke here, Tim Sweeney mocked Business Insider for being too much of a pessimist. People weighed in on Twitter saying that the article should be titled “RIP Meta” instead.
Well, that was an attack, my plants are long gone. 🥲
But seeing the response, we believe the metaverse is doing quite well, but Meta? Not so much, which makes it hard to look past the tech industry’s knack for chasing half-baked ideas. So, do we need to worry about AI as well? 😟
Um, we don’t think so. With ChatGPT becoming an important part of our lives and AI, in general, proving its practical value with new innovations, we’re hopeful and not jinxing anything yet! 🤞
